“Work smarter, not harder.” I like to say: “work smarter, so you can work even harder.” Our attention is divided by the increasing demands society asks from us. Since the capability exists, so does the priority. Whether it be a buzzing phone, a quick google ad, a bright poster on the way to work or our phone buzzing again, we are cultured to live in distraction. Praise to coffee, our sword in this battle.
When this precious attention is given to a task, it is important that it used effectively. Efficiency to complete tasks before distraction, and efficiency because it helps save the company saves money most importantly.
Whether you are previously aware or not, Google Chrome (which I highly suggest) have extensions for download. Google extensions are an excellent way to improve work and access information quickly. In no particular order, here are 10 Google extensions I suggest anyone working for a small business to take a look at.
This is especially helpful for people like me. Those who aren’t as grammatically gifted, it is comforting to have something more than spelling check that come default on most search engines. Grammarly checks emails, Facebook, LinkedIn, anything you write. It comes free with hundreds of common mistake corrections. For $11.99/month, it’ll check for 150+ additional points, plagiarism, and vocabulary suggestions.
3. Google Drive
Google Drive is a cloud-based storage site, similar to Dropbox. With Google Drive, I’m including: Google Docs (similar to Word), Google Sheets (Excel), Google Slides (Powerpoint), and Google Keep (note taking), and Google Hangout (Instant Messaging). This all promote group collaboration as changes are seen real-time and don’t require emails sent back and forth.
After you’ve taken my advice and download Google Drive…This extension allows you to save web content directly to Google Drive through a browser action or context menu. You can save documents, images, and HTML5 audio and video all by right-clicking and selecting ‘Save to Google Drive’.
This is a perfect extension for people who don’t mind learning something new. The abundance of shortcuts we can use every day can be overwhelming and hard to remember. KeyRocket gives subtle tips to save microseconds when on Gmail. Seconds add up and there is no downside to learning something new.
Data security is extremely important. Information can so easily be stolen, protecting it is a must. I should have put this up at #1 because I think it is that important. It automatically switches sites from insecure “HTTP” to secure “HTTPS.” Protecting you from forms of surveillance, account hijacking, and some forms of censorship.
Before downloading this extension this is how I had to take screenshots: First I had to look up how to take a screenshot, then Ctrl+Prt Scr, paste in paint (yes paint), then maneuver paint to crop exactly what I wanted. The worst. This is very user-friendly, in fact, I used this to crop out all the pictures used on this page.
This is especially convenient for businesses that buy products online that are not always from the same source. Like stated above, InvisibleHand discreetly notifies you if the product you’re shopping for is available more cheaply from another retailer or travel site.
This extension highlights the Google search keywords in web pages. This way you can instantly find the relevant parts of a page. Similar to the functionality of CTRL+F. but highlights all of the You can also search a word by highlighting it and right-clicking rather than copy and pasting.
10. Be Limitless
Be Limitless is a beautiful alternative to a typical new tab page. It helps with productivity by keeping track of the time you are on specific websites. The dashboard also includes a smart notepad that makes to-dos, reminders and countdowns easy to create and remember. Create goals and achieve them with inspiring images and quotes.
